7 Steps for Self-Coaching

7 Steps for Self-Coaching

One of the things that consistently happens to people who have had a personal coach for awhile is that they start to coach themselves. This is not bad for business as a coach, this is truly cause to celebrate!

We all are guilty of living just hoping that something specific will happen in our lives but not really doing much about it. Coaching moves us to action and strategy, two of the many reasons why it is so powerful.

Behind the conversational flow of a great coaching session is a model, often with 3 - 6 steps depending on the model being used. Your coach is keeping that model in mind even if you can’t feel it as you get coached.

Let’s pull back the curtain a bit today and talk about some of the tools that you can use with yourself - here are 7 steps you can use for some self-coaching.

I’d love you to pick something that has been just a dream or desire in your life and use this process to create some movement for yourself.

1. Be very clear and concise on what you want to accomplish in your self-coaching session.

In coaching we talk about the contract or session goals. The more clear this is the closer you will get to it. Keep it bite size. Think of this as setting GPS coordinates. Is it Montreal, Quebec you want to get to or 917 Catherine Street, Montreal, Quebec?

2. List relevant strengths and resources that you have that can support you in this objective.

This can include past experiences where you used skills that are relevant to this situation.

3. Brainstorm ideas for moving forward.

This is not the time yet to get attached to the ideas, let them free flow for a while first.

4. Choose the ideas that would be wise steps to start with.

A key point here is to be realistic. Start in a way that is sustainable.

5. What barriers could get in the way?

Anticipating barriers means that you can have a strategy ahead of time and increase your likelihood of success. This will also help you fine-tune your steps. What additional resources or tools will help you get where you want to get to?

6. Decide on specific goals, deadlines and measures of success.

Without this step we are back at having lovely ideas and dreams but with much less hope of turning them into reality. Create a strategy that you can keep growing as you move forward.

7. Build in some accountability.

This may be you holding yourself accountable to specific deliverables or you may want to incorporate some support from others.

Obviously there can be much more involved than just this but doing this regularly on a few items in your life will truly make a difference!

This week my desire to lose weight has been my focus. I’ve invested in a tool (Fitbit Charge HR), created some specific goals, created a bright pink poster to chart on, printed some healthy recipes, purchased the appropriate ingredients and started (again) tracking in MyFitnessPal.

What’s your area of growth?

What do you want to coach yourself on?
