It is debatable which is the highest form of laughter - laughing until you cry, laughing until you pee, laughing until you can’t breathe. My dear friend, a doctor, assures me that laughing until you pee is the ultimate laughter.
Regardless, most of us aren’t doing enough of it!!!
The average child laughs more than 200 times per day, while the average adult laughs about 10 times per day. according to Certified laugh specialist Michele B. Granberg.
More than once I’ve been asked to quiet down due to laughing too loudly with friends. Usually I tend to be a rule-follower but I’m a little bit proud of this - if you are going to get in trouble, can’t think of many better reasons.
I think part of the power of laughter is that it feels defiant. Laughing when there are many stressful things going on is a reminder that life is bigger than the stresses, than the moment.
Laughter has been shown to lower blood pressure, strengthen our immune system and literally change our body chemistry, producing endorphins. When we are laughing we can’t simultaneously be angry or anxious. Laughter gives us a little psychological distance enabling us to view our situation with better perspective and logic.
So, what can we do to get more of it?
Like most things, choosing to be intentional about it is a great starting place.
What or who makes you laugh?
Thankfully we live in a day when we can youtube or google funny things any time. (Beats the heck out of waiting for someone you work with to have a good joke.) Times when I need a lift I literally just look up funny videos. Even if you don’t start in a good mood, watching things that just force you to laugh always helps.
Do something silly or carefree.
The slogan for Austin, TX is “Keep Austin Weird”. I love that it’s weird because it reflects a population that doesn’t want to just be serious all the time. I LOVE that!
If your life has gotten serious it’s time to do something about it!
- Plan some fun nights with people who know how to laugh
- Play Cards Against Humanity
- Take an improv class
- Incorporate funny video breaks in to your day (make your co-workers wonder what’s going on!)
- I dare you, comment with a funny joke or link!
